Wout van Aert clinched victory in stage three of the Vuelta a España on Monday, triumphing in a sprint finish ahead of Kaden Groves. The Belgian rider dominated the 191.2-kilometre stage from Lousa to Castelo Branco, Portugal, showcasing his speed and strength to outpace the Australian Groves, who had won stage two. Van Aert completed the stage in four hours, 40 minutes, and 42 seconds, securing his 10th Grand Tour stage win and maintaining his lead in the general classification with the red jersey.
Van Aert, who had finished third and second in the first two stages of the Vuelta, expressed his satisfaction with the win, his first since February. He noted that his strategy of launching his sprint early, just before 200 meters, was crucial to his success. Van Aert praised his team's support, highlighting their role in positioning him perfectly for the final sprint.
Looking ahead, Van Aert will shift to a supporting role for his teammate Sepp Kuss in stage four, which will feature the first significant opportunity for general classification contenders to assert themselves. Van Aert will continue to wear the red jersey for one more day, while Kuss, the defending champion, is currently one minute and six seconds behind, and three-time Vuelta champion Primoz Roglic trails by 30 seconds.
In the earlier part of the stage, a breakaway group including Spaniards Ibon Ruiz, Luis Angel Mate, Unai Iribar, and Xabier Isasa led for a significant portion of the race. However, the peloton, driven by the heat and the stage profile, reeled in Isasa with about 20 kilometers remaining, setting the stage for another bunch sprint. Stage four will see the race enter Spain, with a challenging 170.5-kilometer route from Plasencia to Pico Villuercas, featuring a tough final climb that is expected to favor climbers like Kuss and Roglic.
