As the World Teqball Championship Qualifiers 2024 come to a climax with explosive finals in various categories in Aba, the Secretary of the qualifiers' Local Organizing Committee (LOC), Michael Chinedu Ogbonna, has rated the technical standard of the games very high.
Ogbonna, on the sidelines of the final match, said that with the standard and skills displayed by the Teqball players, he has no doubt that the Nigerian contingent to the forthcoming World Championship will make the nation proud.
"I am not surprised by what I am seeing in these qualifiers because our players are developing daily, and they can stand their own anywhere and against any player in the world," Ogbonna, who also doubles as the Vice Chairman of the Abia State Teqball Association, noted. "It's on record that Nigerian Teqball players are among the top 5 in Africa, having taken all the medals in Tunisia last year."
He recounted the exploits of Victor Oyemade, who was voted the Most Valuable Player at the last World Series held in Vietnam.
"Apart from Victor, who is rated among the top Teqball players worldwide and Africa's No. 2, we boast of other world beaters like Tobi Mejed, Andrew Ikoko, and Khalid Akorede, among others, and we are still getting better."
On the organization of the qualifiers, the LOC Secretary said they were above average, though they could have done better given the limited resources available.
"Though I can't score myself, if I must, I will rate us a modest 6 out of 10. One area I would have loved to see an improvement in is the area of spectators. This could not happen because we lacked money for promotions."
He appreciated the Abia State Government for supporting the development of Teqball in the state, which is further demonstrated by the sponsorship of the Championship Qualifiers in Aba.
