World Rugby Men’s Rankings: Manu Samoa reclaims top 10 ranking after eight years
Posted : 24 July 2023
Manu Samoa is set to make a remarkable return to the top 10 of the World Rugby Men’s Rankings powered by Capgemini after nearly eight years. The Pacific Island nation's impressive performance, including a 24-22 win over Japan in the Rugby World Cup 2023 Pool D, has propelled them up the rankings.
Samoa's head coach, Seilala Mapusua, has been enjoying a successful run with seven wins and only one defeat during his tenure. Despite Japan losing their former captain and number eight, Michael Leitch, to a red card in the match against Samoa, the Brave Blossoms put up a tough fight with four second-half penalties from Seungshin Lee.
Samoa's victory earned them 1.43 points, allowing them to surpass Georgia and claim the 10th spot in the rankings. Meanwhile, Japan will drop to 12th place, their lowest position since November 2016.
In another match, Fiji secured a 36-20 victory against Tonga, with Waisea Nayacalevu, Sam Matavesi, and Josua Tuisova crossing the try line. Despite their win, Fiji will maintain their current 13th position in the rankings.
Tonga showed significant improvement compared to the previous year's match, putting up a stronger performance with tries from Siua Maile, Halaleva Fifita, and Kyren Taumoefolau. However, they will remain in 15th place.
