Women's Open: Win in 2022, according to Ashleigh Buhai, ignited the "best eight months of career."
Posted : 01 June 2023
According to Ashleigh Buhai, winning the AIG Women's Open last year was the catalyst for the most prosperous stretch of her 16-year professional career.
The South African, 34, was defeated by South Korea's In Gee Chun in a play-off after giving up a five-shot lead in the final round.
Since then, Buhai has won the South African Women's Open and the Women's Australian Open.
"It gave me the confidence that I could win in the biggest pressure situation" she said
"It's been the best eight months of my career."
"You've got to treat every tournament the same," she said.
"When I rock up and play any of the majors, I do the same preparation week in and week out to create consistency.
"You can't put one on a bigger pedestal than the other because it creates more anxiety and tension.
At Walton Heath in Surrey, where she will seek to defend her Women's Open title starting on August 10, Buhai said she won't put any pressure on herself when she plays the course for the first time the week before the competition.
"To defend would be the ultimate goal, but what I've learned over past year and a half on the mental side is, once you start setting outcome goals, that's where your mind kind of goes to.
"The way you achieve outcome goals is sticking to the processes."
The US Women's Open, the Amundi Evian Championship, and the KPMG Women's PGA Championship all took place between this month's KPMG Women's PGA Championship and the Women's Open, the fourth and final major of the year.
The Women's Open will feature live music for the first time, with Ellie Goulding headlining a free performance for ticket holders following play on Saturday.
