Women's Tour de France 2025 Route Unveiled, Features Challenging Nine-Stage Course

Posted : 29 October 2024

The route for the fourth edition of the women's Tour de France was unveiled on Tuesday, showcasing a challenging nine-stage course designed to highlight the increasing competitiveness in women's cycling. Marion Rousse, the director of the Tour de France Femmes, noted that the decision to extend the race to nine stages reflects the growing standards within the sport. "The level in women's cycling is rising, and that's why we have nine stages instead of eight. And nine hard ones," she explained.

Spanning 1,165 kilometers, the route will traverse a diagonal line across France, starting from the Atlantic port of Vannes in the west and concluding at the Haute-Savoie ski resort of Chatel in the east, near the Swiss border. Following the excitement of the 2024 edition, which featured a dramatic finish on the Alpe d'Huez, the 2025 route aims to elevate the intensity further, promising a thrilling competition for cyclists and fans alike.

Among the highlights is stage eight, termed the 'Queen stage,' which features a challenging climb at the Col de Madeleine. This stage culminates in an 18.6-kilometer ascent with an average incline of 8.1 percent, described by Rousse as "quite something" and "a dreadful climb." The final stage will also test the leaders as they face a grueling 124-kilometer route with significant inclines, ensuring that whoever is in contention must demonstrate their strength and resilience.

The race will kick off in Brittany, with stage two taking place in Brest, where large crowds are expected to support the riders. This section will lead to Quimper through the windy region of Finistere, one of the traditional heartlands of cycling in France. Other notable locations along the route include the wine region of Saumur, the historic city of Poitiers, the volcanic Massif Central, and the industrial hub of Clermont-Ferrand, adding to the rich tapestry of landscapes that the competitors will encounter.
