Former champions West Indies rebounded from a heavy defeat against South Africa with a six-wicket victory over Scotland in the Women's T20 World Cup on Sunday. After their 10-wicket loss to South Africa at the same Dubai venue just two days prior, the 2016 winners appeared more confident and in control against a Scottish team experiencing its first tournament outing.
Scotland's batting lineup struggled, managing only 99-8 in their 20 overs. The West Indies chased down the modest target with ease, completing the task with 50 balls remaining and significantly improving their net run rate. Key contributions came from Qiana Joseph, who top-scored with 31 from 18 balls, including three fours and a six, and Deandra Dottin, who hit two sixes in her unbeaten 28 off 15 deliveries. Dottin was well-supported by Chinelle Henry, who scored a brisk 18 from 10 balls and also earned the player of the match title for her earlier bowling performance of 1-10 in four overs.
West Indies captain Hayley Matthews praised her team’s efforts, highlighting their strong bowling that limited Scotland’s scoring opportunities. Matthews, who achieved her 100th T20 international wicket in this game, emphasized their strategic approach to reach a safe position before focusing on their net run rate. Meanwhile, Scotland’s captain Kathryn Bryce acknowledged the challenge, citing their struggle to build momentum in the middle overs against West Indies' bowling attack.
Scotland’s loss to West Indies follows a narrow 16-run defeat to Bangladesh in their tournament opener on Thursday, leaving them winless so far in their World Cup campaign. Despite a promising 46-run stand between Bryce and Ailsa Lister for the third wicket, the Scots found it difficult to recover from an early setback and faced further pressure as West Indies’ leg-spinner Afy Fletcher dismissed both Bryce and Lister, along with Priyanaz Chatterji for a first-ball duck, in a decisive middle-order collapse.
