West Indies Defeat England to Secure Women's T20 World Cup Semifinal Spot

Posted : 15 October 2024

An explosive start from Qiana Joseph and Hayley Matthews propelled the West Indies to a six-wicket victory over England, securing their place in the Women’s T20 World Cup semifinals on Tuesday. Joseph scored her first T20 international half-century with a dynamic 52, while captain Matthews powered her way to a brisk 50 off 38 balls, helping the West Indies chase down England's total of 141-7 with two overs to spare.

With South Africa also advancing from Group B, England’s loss marked the end of their campaign. Expressing pride in her team’s achievement, Matthews celebrated Joseph's milestone performance. “We believed in our ability to chase down any target, and Joseph’s first T20I fifty couldn’t have come at a better time,” she said, noting the team’s confidence in chasing targets throughout the tournament.

Matthews set the tone for the chase, hitting a six and two boundaries in the opening over bowled by Lauren Bell. Joseph soon joined in, taking on Sophie Ecclestone with back-to-back boundaries, pushing the West Indies to a rapid 55-0 within five overs. The England fielders faltered under pressure, missing five straightforward chances, and Matthews continued her assault by hitting Charlie Dean for three consecutive boundaries in the sixth over.

Joseph’s impactful 38-ball innings, featuring two sixes and six fours, ended in the 13th over, and Matthews followed shortly after. However, Deandra Dottin’s 27 helped West Indies clinch their first win over England in 14 encounters and their first victory away from home in a decade. England’s skipper Heather Knight acknowledged West Indies’ strong play and admitted England's fielding and short bowling allowed the opposition to capitalize.
