Werner Deyzel Shines in Pro-Am Victory Ahead of Vodacom Origins of Golf

Sunshine Tour rookie Werner Deyzel is off to a strong start ahead of the Vodacom Origins of Golf tournament at Sishen Golf Club, following his pro-am win alongside amateur partner Hennie Muller. The victory adds to Deyzel’s confidence as he navigates a promising season, currently placing second in the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings, just behind leader Kyle de Beer. His performances this year, including top finishes in the SunBet Challenge and Bain’s Whisky Ubunye Championship, highlight his potential.

 

Despite the pro-am being more of a relaxed event, Deyzel acknowledged the importance of his amateur partner, praising Muller for his solid play that contributed significantly to their victory. The format, which had amateurs paired with different professionals across two days, saw Scotland’s Craig Ross teaming up with Muller on the first day before Deyzel helped guide him to success on day two. This win has set a positive tone for the 24-year-old heading into the main event in Kathu.

 

Deyzel is optimistic about his chances at Sishen Golf Club, feeling familiar with the course from previous amateur competitions. He noted that his game is in a good place, with only his putting needing improvement. Participating in the pro-am allowed Deyzel to enjoy time with amateur golfers and Vodacom clients while also serving as a practice round ahead of the tournament. His experience at Sishen has given him confidence as he prepares for what could be a fruitful week.

 

The pro-am also featured a golf clinic for nearly 35 children from the Kuruman chapter of the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB), where young talents like 10-year-old Delrico Agterdam were coached by Sunshine Tour professionals. Agterdam, already playing off a seven handicap and ranked No. 2 among juniors in the Northern Cape, impressed the pros with his skills and dedication. Annemarie Rabie, the SAGDB coach, praised the clinics for offering local children invaluable opportunities to interact with professional golfers, fostering their passion for the sport.
