Posted : 18 February 2024

Gary Wilson secured his spot in the Welsh Open final by defeating five-time champion John Higgins 6-4 in a thrilling match marked by Wilson's impressive breaks, including a 147, along with scores of 104, 82, and 89. Despite Higgins mounting a comeback from a 5-1 deficit to narrow the gap, Wilson maintained his composure and clinched victory with a break of 73 in the decisive frame.

In the other semi-final, Martin O'Donnell displayed remarkable poise, particularly in the deciding frame against Elliot Slessor, where he crafted a superb break of 126 to secure his place in his first-ever ranking final. O'Donnell's steady performance throughout the match highlighted his determination and focus under pressure.

Reflecting on his impressive performance, Wilson expressed his delight, emphasizing his focused approach and the thrill of achieving his fifth career maximum break, becoming the 13th player to reach that milestone. Higgins, acknowledging Wilson's early dominance, credited his opponent's exceptional play, admitting there was little he could do to counter Wilson's strong start.

O'Donnell, who had earlier defeated world champion Luca Brecel, showcased his resilience and skill, maintaining his composure in crucial moments to secure a hard-fought victory. As he reflected on his achievement, O'Donnell attributed his success to his dedication and focus, highlighting the importance of remaining composed under pressure.
