Tyrrell Hatton of England dropped in the standings as Wyndham Clark claimed a two-shot lead entering the Wells Fargo Championship's final round.
At Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina, American Clark shot an eight-under-par 63 to go to 16 under par as he pursues his first PGA Championship.
After 64 holes, compatriot Xander Schauffele is two strokes down.
Hatton shared the lead with Clark and Nate Lashley overnight, but a three-under 68 dropped him.
He and Australian Adam Scott are level for third place on 11 under par, one stroke behind fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood in a three-way tie.
The 29-year-old Clark scored a round of eight birdies without making a bogey, while his playing partner Schauffele improved his prospects of winning the tournament for the
seventh time overall by shooting four under par over the final five holes.
"I felt like I was really mentally strong," Clark said. "It's a high-pressure, tough golf course and early on guys were making birdies.
"I just stayed really patient and I was, as they say, kind of in the zone and really focused out there."
