Koki Watanabe and Jesper Toft along with Amalie Magelund celebrated their breakthrough victories at the YONEX Canada Open 2024, marking their first HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 titles.
Watanabe, ranked 18th globally, secured his maiden Super 500 title by defeating 37th-ranked Alex Lanier in a commanding third-game victory, 21-6, after a closely contested battle in the initial sets. Reflecting on his achievement, Watanabe expressed his joy, emphasizing the importance of hard work over physical stature and setting his sights on future Super 750 and Super 1000 tournaments.
Lanier acknowledged Watanabe's superior performance, attributing his own fatigue in the final stages to the Japanese player's speed and consistency on court. Despite the loss, Lanier remains focused on achieving a top-32 ranking and targeting a medal at the World Championships, followed by a Super 1000 title.
Meanwhile, the new pairing of Jesper Toft and Amalie Magelund continued their impressive ascent by clinching their inaugural Super 500 title in only their third tournament together. Overcoming a daunting deficit against seasoned compatriots Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje, Toft and Magelund staged a remarkable comeback from 6-14 down in the second set to eventually triumph, 9-21, 24-22, 21-12. Magelund credited Toft's strategic serves for turning the tide in their favor and expressed disbelief and elation at their unexpected victory.
The duo's win not only solidifies their potential but also underscores their ability to challenge top-ranked pairs, marking a significant milestone in their burgeoning careers within the competitive world of badminton.
