The City of Lagos has been chosen to host the second edition of the West Africa Scrabble Championship (WASC) from November 22nd to November 26th, 2023.
Lagos was selected as the host over Benin City and Abuja, which were also considered to organize the largest sub-regional Scrabble tournament in Africa, featuring five countries: Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and the host, Nigeria.
Each of the participating countries, except for Nigeria as the host, will have 15 players, while Nigeria will have 20 wordsmiths competing over the three grueling days.
A total prize money of $12,000 has been allocated for the individual and team events of the championship.
John Curtis, the Technical Director of the second edition of the West Africa Scrabble Championship (WASC), who also serves as the Chairman of the Sub-Committee for Technical and Tournament Logistics, explained that the West Africa Championship consists of 28 games, including 1 random game, 22 lagged games, and 5 king of the hill pairings.
Engineer Toke Aka, the President of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) and Head of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC), mentioned that further details about the various Sub-Committees and the event venue will be announced later.
Eta Karo from Nigeria is the defending champion in the individual category, while Nigeria holds the team event title, which was won in Accra, the capital of Ghana, last year.
The complete list of Team Nigeria for the Championship will be revealed on November 14th. The defending champion, Eta Karo, receives an automatic invitation to the event, while the remaining 14 participants will be selected based on national ranking, and five wild cards will be chosen by the NSF.
