Warren Gatland's coaching revival: Wales shines in Rugby World Cup
Posted : 26 September 2023
Warren Gatland's return to coaching the Welsh rugby team has been credited with their impressive start in the Rugby World Cup. After a disappointing Six Nations campaign earlier this year, Wales has turned things around and secured a spot in the quarter-finals.
Scrum-half Gareth Davies, a key figure in Wales' win over Australia, believes Gatland deserves recognition for revitalizing the team and helping them rediscover their identity.
Wales has won all three of its matches in the tournament, including a convincing 40-6 victory over Australia. Gatland, who returned to coach Wales at the end of last year after previously leading the team from 2007 to 2019, had a challenging start to his second tenure with just one win in the Six Nations.
However, in the past six months, Wales has undergone a transformation, securing group-stage wins against Fiji and Portugal, along with the impressive victory against Australia. Gareth Davies attributes much of the team's success to Gatland's leadership, emphasizing the impact of the coaching staff's stability and direction.
Davies stated, "We are all back to where we want to be because of this management. Warren Gatland has just got his way, and it works for me and everyone else in the squad." The team's renewed sense of unity and purpose is evident both on and off the pitch, with players enjoying a positive environment and demonstrating strong camaraderie.
Wales forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys, who has been part of the coaching staff during Gatland's previous tenure and Wayne Pivac's tenure, echoed Davies' sentiments.
Humphreys highlighted how Gatland has returned the team to its core principles, emphasizing fitness and hard work as the foundation of their success. He noted that Wales now believes they work harder than any other team, making them a formidable opponent.
Wales is on track to reach its third semi-final in four World Cup appearances, with Gatland's coaching philosophy playing a pivotal role in their resurgence. Their next challenge is a match against Georgia, and Wales looks set to advance to the quarter-finals alongside Fiji, while Australia faces the prospect of an unprecedented group-stage exit.
