The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, promised to give monetary rewards to the triumphant teams as motivation for them to continue achieving success. Ogalla, represented by Rear Adm. Kennedy Ezeta, Chief of Administration (Navy), made this promise to the victorious male and female Spikers Volleyball Teams for restoring the navy’s glory in sports and winning trophies during a reception in Abuja.
The CNS Spikers team won the 2023 Nigeria Volleyball Premier League (women) on Sunday, maintaining an unbeaten run since 2022. The CNS emphasized that the Nigerian Navy, under his command, would continue to invest in sportsmen and women to secure ongoing success.
He also pledged to prioritize the recruitment of sportsmen and women in the navy to address manpower needs in the area of sports. He advised athletes to continue developing themselves physically and intellectually to remain relevant beyond their sports careers.
Commodore Mohammed Muye, Chairman of NN Volleyball Association and CNS Spikers Volleyball Club, explained that the club was established in 2021 to participate in the Nigeria Volleyball League and restore the navy’s lost glory in sports. The team underwent rigorous training and preparation for competitions at the local, national, and international levels.
Muye called for the construction of a sports camp in Abuja, equipped with indoor and recreational facilities for the team. He also requested occasional special recruitment for sportsmen and women in various sporting events.
He highlighted the CNS Spikers' achievements, including winning the 2022 National Divisions I and II Volleyball leagues in both the female and male categories, gaining promotion to the National Volleyball Premier League for females and National Division 1 for males in 2023. The male team was crowned champions in Kaduna in October and gained promotion to play in the premier league in 2024. The female team topped the 1st and 2nd Phases of the premier league in Abuja in July and November, becoming champions of the National Volleyball Premier League 2023.
Muye mentioned that both the male and female teams received nominations based on excellent performances to represent Nigeria at the African Club Championship in Kelibia, Tunisia. The CNS Spikers defeated highly-rated teams from Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Cote d’Ivoire despite participating for the first time.
