Veteran golfer Matt Kuchar and 2012 US Open champion Webb Simpson secured their spots in the upcoming US Open through qualifying. They competed alongside 671 other golfers in a 36-hole qualifier, aptly named "Golf's Longest Day," for a chance to be among the 44 players to advance to the main event.
Kuchar aced the qualifier, shooting 7 under par at The Bear's Club in Florida. While he boasts an impressive career with nine PGA Tour wins, a lack of recent success meant he needed to qualify this way. Simpson, whose exemption from his 2012 win expired last year, also participated in the qualifier. He tied for fourth place at Duke University Golf Club in North Carolina.
Meanwhile, Australian golfer Adam Scott's streak of playing in every major championship since 2001 might be coming to an end. He narrowly missed out on qualifying through a playoff at the Springfield (Ohio) Country Club. However, he has a chance to receive an exemption if he remains in the top 60 of the Official World Golf Ranking by June 10th.
LIV Golf members also participated in the qualifiers. South African Dean Burmester finished second behind Kuchar in Florida, while Chilean Joaquin Niemann missed out on a qualifying spot by one stroke. Niemann might receive a special exemption from the USGA, similar to the one he got for the PGA Championship.
