Andrea Vendrame clinched victory in stage 19 of the Giro d'Italia, covering a 157 km route from Mortegliano to Sappada. Riding for Decathlon–AG2R, Vendrame broke away from the leading group and went solo for the last 30 km, securing his team's second stage win. Taking advantage of worsening weather conditions with rain, Vendrame made a daring decision to break away on the descent, building a significant lead over the chasing pack.
The 29-year-old Italian, who last won a Giro stage in 2021, crossed the finish line with one arm raised in triumph. Pelayo Sanchez finished second, nearly a minute behind, while stage 17 victor Georg Steinhauser claimed third place. The peloton crossed the line approximately 16 minutes after Vendrame's solo triumph.
Maintaining his hold on the maglia rosa jersey, Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates leads by seven minutes and 42 seconds over Daniel Felipe Martinez, despite encountering a puncture. Geraint Thomas, currently third, faced a setback as he crashed about six kilometers from the finish, necessitating a bike change.
However, the peloton slowed down to allow the Welshman to rejoin, reflecting the mutual respect among riders in the Giro. Pogacar anticipates controlling the race in the upcoming mountain stage from Alpago to Bassano del Grappa, eyeing a potential stage win before the final procession in Rome on Sunday.
