In the Bain’s Whisky Ubunye Championship at Silver Lakes Golf and Wildlife Estate, Daniel van Tonder and Malcolm Mitchell, along with Jovan Rebula and Martin Vorster, are leading with a combined score of 11 under par heading into the weekend. The tournament shifted to foursomes play on Friday, where Van Tonder and Mitchell carded a 64, while Rebula and Vorster secured a 68 amidst challenging conditions including strong winds and hard greens.
Van Tonder and Mitchell, who are brothers-in-law, demonstrated their synergy and trust by navigating the tricky Silver Lakes course efficiently. Mitchell praised Van Tonder's reliable form and their complementary playing styles, emphasizing their mutual understanding and focus on having fun. Their teamwork was evident as they took advantage of each other’s strengths, such as their different ball flights, to perform well.
Similarly, Rebula and Vorster, who are close friends, showed a strong partnership throughout their round. Rebula highlighted Vorster's consistent tee shots and their well-planned approach to the course. Despite the additional pressure of playing for a partner, both players managed the demanding conditions effectively, utilizing a solid game plan to stay at the top of the leaderboard.
Hennie O’Kennedy and LB Boshoff, one stroke behind the leaders with a 67, and Ryan van Velzen, defending his title with new partner Yurav Premlall, are also in contention, just two shots off the lead. The third round will continue with foursomes play, followed by a final round of better ball on Sunday.
