Wout van Aert, who wore the green jersey, was forced to abandon the Vuelta a España after a crash on stage 16, while Marc Soler from UAE Team Emirates secured a victory on the challenging mountainous route. Soler finished 18 seconds ahead of Italian rider Filippo Zana, who was second, with British cyclist Max Poole coming in third, closely trailing Zana.
General classification leader Ben O'Connor managed to maintain his slim lead over Primoz Roglic, now holding a mere 5-second advantage. O'Connor's performance was crucial in preserving his position at the top of the standings amidst the intense competition.
Van Aert, who had previously won three stages in this year's tour, crashed into a hillside during a descent with about 48 kilometers remaining. Despite initially getting back on his bike, he soon had to stop again and was seen clutching his knee while receiving medical attention from his team's car. The Belgian rider, who had been leading both the mountain and points classifications, was forced to withdraw from the race.
The next challenge for the riders is stage 17 on Wednesday, covering 141.5 kilometers from Arneuro to Santander. This stage will continue to test the cyclists with its medium mountainous terrain.
