Utah Prepares for Historic PGA Tour Event as Salt Lake City Hosts the 2034 Winter Olympics

Earlier this year, Salt Lake City was awarded the 2034 Winter Olympics, marking an exciting development for the area. As part of this momentum, the team previously known as the Arizona Coyotes has relocated to Salt Lake City, temporarily rebranding itself as the Utah Hockey Club. This team is set to kick off its regular season on Tuesday night, adding to the sports landscape of Utah.

 

In another significant milestone, Utah is preparing to host its first PGA Tour event since 1963 with the upcoming inaugural Black Desert Championship. This tournament will take place at the Black Desert Golf Course in Ivins, located in the southwestern corner of the state. The event is highly anticipated, as it brings professional golf back to Utah after decades.

 

Among the nine players in the tournament, Patrick Fishburn and Zac Blair, both with deep ties to Utah, are particularly excited about the opportunity to compete in what feels like a home game during the FedEx Cup Fall season. Fishburn expressed his enthusiasm, noting that Utah is a hub for sports, and having another significant event in the state is a thrilling prospect.

 

Playing at high altitude in the Rocky Mountains presents unique challenges for golfers, which Fishburn highlighted, referencing his experiences at Ogden Country Club. He noted that factors such as temperature and altitude can significantly affect how the ball behaves. Blair added that the distinctive black lava rock present throughout the course could pose difficulties for newcomers, as finding a ball that lands in the rocks might prove nearly impossible. Both players, who attended Brigham Young University together, are eager to leverage their local experience as they aim for success in the tournament.
