Usman Returns: Nigerian Nightmare Faces Unbeaten Buckley at UFC Atlanta

Posted : 12 June 2025

Former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is set to make his highly anticipated return to the Octagon this Saturday, June 14, at UFC Fight Night in Atlanta. The event, taking place at State Farm Arena, will see Usman face off against surging contender Joaquin Buckley in a pivotal welterweight clash.

Despite a nearly two-year hiatus from competition, Usman remains confident in his abilities. In a recent interview, he declared, "Absolutely. I feel like I'm better than every one of those guys ahead of me," emphasizing his belief that he is still the top fighter in the welterweight division.

Usman, known as "The Nigerian Nightmare," boasts an impressive record of 20 wins and 4 losses. He held the welterweight title from 2019 to 2022, successfully defending it five times against notable opponents such as Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal. However, he is coming off three consecutive losses, including two unanimous decisions to Leon Edwards and a short-notice middleweight defeat to Khamzat Chimaev.

Buckley, on the other hand, enters the bout with a perfect 6-0 record in the welterweight division. The 31-year-old American has been on a tear, most recently securing a third-round TKO victory over Colby Covington in December 2024 . A win over Usman would likely propel Buckley into title contention.

The co-main event features a women's flyweight bout between former strawweight champion Rose Namajunas and rising contender Miranda Maverick. Namajunas, now ranked sixth in the flyweight division, aims to halt Maverick's four-fight winning streak and reassert herself as a top contender.

UFC Fight Night: Usman vs. Buckley is set to be a thrilling night of mixed martial arts action. Fans can expect an exciting main card, with the Usman vs. Buckley bout headlining the event. Preliminary fights will begin at 12:00 AM ET, with the main card starting at 3:00 AM ET. The event will be broadcast live on TNT Sports in the UK and available for streaming on UFC Fight Pass.

As Usman steps back into the Octagon, all eyes will be on Atlanta to see if he can reaffirm his status as the UFC's premier welterweight or if Buckley will continue his ascent toward a title shot.
