USA Ryder Cup team to face Europe, featuring debutants, qualifiers, and wildcards
Posted : 21 August 2023
The USA Ryder Cup team for the upcoming event against Europe will feature several debutants, including Open champion Brian Harman, US Open winner Wyndham Clark, and Max Homa.
Among the team's qualifiers are world number one Scottie Scheffler, Olympic champion Xander Schauffele, and Patrick Cantlay. Notably, Brooks Koepka, who won the US PGA Championship, is reliant on one of six wildcard picks due to his limited chances to earn qualifying points.
The 44th Ryder Cup is scheduled from September 29 to October 1 and will take place at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome. Koepka, originally ranked fifth, was overtaken by Homa and Schauffele in the final qualifying event, the BMW Championship, due to his participation on the LIV Golf circuit.
Captain Zach Johnson will reveal the six wildcard picks after the Tour Championship, marking the end of the PGA Tour season. On the European side, captain Luke Donald will announce his team on September 4, following the conclusion of European qualification at the European Masters in Switzerland.
Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland, Spain's Jon Rahm, and Norway's Viktor Hovland have secured their places on the European team. The USA holds the Ryder Cup title after their significant victory with a record score of 19-9 in 2021 in Wisconsin.
