The United States holds a 7-5 lead over Europe in the Solheim Cup after a morning of intense competition at Finca Cortesin. The morning session saw both teams trading blows, resulting in a 2-2 draw in the four matches played.
In the top match, Spain's Carlota Ciganda secured a crucial point for Europe by sinking the winning putt on the 17th hole, much to the delight of the home fans.
Swedish rookies Maja Stark and Linn Grant engaged in a fierce battle in the last match of the morning. The lead changed hands multiple times, with the American duo of Danielle Kang and Andrea Lee fighting back each time. However, Stark's remarkable 20-foot putt on the 17th gave Europe a sixth and final lead, and Grant held her nerve to secure a crucial point with a 10-foot putt on the last hole.
The United States secured their two wins in the morning matches. Lexi Thompson and Megan Khang narrowly defeated Anna Nordqvist and Leona Maguire on the final hole. Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz dominated their match against Georgia Hall and Celine Boutier, winning 5&3. This victory was a notable upset, as Hall and Boutier had previously been unbeaten when paired together in the Solheim Cup.
In the second match, Khang and Thompson managed to clinch a point for the U.S. on the final hole, staging a comeback after being two holes down to Nordqvist and Maguire. Maguire's missed putts on the 9th, 10th, and 11th holes allowed the U.S. to turn the match around.
The morning's opening match saw Ciganda and Emily Pedersen from Europe emerge victorious against Jennifer Kupcho and Lilia Vu from the U.S. The Americans struggled on the greens, with putting errors giving Europe an early advantage. Despite Kupcho's efforts to recover with a bunker shot and a close-range putt, Europe maintained their lead through the 13th hole. Kupcho's missed putt on the 16th sealed the two-hole victory for Europe, with Ciganda holing the winning putt on the 17th.
The Solheim Cup continues with the afternoon session, and the closely contested matches are sure to provide more excitement for fans on both sides of the competition.
