US Women's Open: Bailey Tardy leads US Women's Open after qualifying
Posted : 08 July 2023
Bailey Tardy, ranked 455th in the world, has emerged as the unexpected leader after the second round of the US Women's Open. The LPGA rookie, who has struggled with five missed cuts and a withdrawal in her 10 events this season, earned a spot at Pebble Beach through a qualifier.
Tardy began the tournament just one shot off the lead after the first round and continued her impressive performance with a four-under 68 on Friday. Her two-day total of seven under par places her two shots ahead of the competition, surprising both fans and herself.
Expressing her joy and gratitude, the 26-year-old American said, "I think that's something that is just so special. I'm honestly just enjoying the moment here. I'm trying not to get too ahead of myself."
This marks Tardy's fourth appearance in the US Women's Open, with her last participation dating back to 2017. However, it is her first time making the cut in this major championship. She secured her place through a four-hole playoff in a qualifying event in Minnesota.
During her second round in California, Tardy carded four birdies and replicated her eagle on the par-five sixth hole from the previous day. She also had two bogeys in her round.
Two shots behind Tardy are her compatriot Allisen Corpuz and South Korea's Hyo Joo Kim, setting the stage for an exciting competition as the tournament progresses.
