US PGA Tour rookie Pierceson Coody made a spectacular debut at the ISCO Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky, shooting a career-best 11-under par 61 in the first round. The 24-year-old American, ranked 175th in the world, needed only 20 putts and achieved 11 birdies, including an impressive six consecutive birdies from the fifth through the tenth hole at Keen Trace Golf Club.
Coody's remarkable performance put him three strokes ahead of his nearest competitors, Rico Hoey from the Philippines and American Hayden Springer. Hoey's round of 64 featured six birdies and a remarkable eagle from off the green at the par-five eighth, which was his second-to-last hole. Springer, who recently shot a 12-under par 59 at the John Deere Classic, joined Hoey at eight-under by sinking a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole, marking his ninth birdie of the day with just one bogey.
Nine players tied for fourth place, each carding a seven-under 65. Coody credited his excellent putting for his success, noting that his 61 was three strokes better than his previous tour low of 64, achieved the prior Sunday at the John Deere Classic. He described the Keen Trace course as conducive to scoring, provided one could keep the ball in play and take advantage of birdie opportunities, which he did with remarkable consistency throughout the round.
Among his standout moments, Coody highlighted his six-birdie streak, which began with a 14-foot birdie at the fifth hole and included a memorable hole-out from a greenside bunker at the ninth. Despite his exceptional play, Coody expressed mild disappointment over missing a 10-foot eagle putt at the par-five 15th, settling for a two-foot birdie instead. As the ISCO Championship coincides with the Scottish Open, where many top players are preparing for the Open Championship at Royal Troon, Coody's performance has certainly made a notable impression.
