US PGA 2023: Bryson DeChambeau leads Scheffler, McIlroy suffers, and Rahm falters
Posted : 19 May 2023
After the opening round of the US PGA Championship at the difficult Oak Hill course in New York was halted by darkness, American Bryson DeChambeau is in the lead.
DeChambeau shot a four-under 66 to have a one-shot advantage over Scottie Scheffler, Dustin Johnson, and Corey Conners.
Jon Rahm, the Masters champion, and Matt Fitzpatrick, the US Open champion from England, both battled and recorded six-over 76s.
The 34-year-old Eric Cole is in first place with a score of five under, but he has just completed 14 holes.
Adam Scott and Dustin Johnson were a couple of the later starters, both of whom have won the Masters.
As they raced to finish their rounds in almost full darkness, they competed for the lead and reached four under before both missed strokes on the 18th.
With six birdies and just two bogeys in his opening round, DeChambeau, who is infamous for bulking up before outmuscling Winged Foot, a course compared to Oak Hill, to win the 2020 US Open, definitely appeared at ease.
