Upsets galore at VICTOR Denmark Open 2023: World champions and heavyweights fall in second round

Posted : 20 October 2023
The VICTOR Denmark Open 2023 saw several surprising upsets as four pairs expected to contend for the title were eliminated in the second round at the Jyske Bank Arena. Notably, the men's doubles world champions, Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae, were defeated in straight games by Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Bagas Maulana, the 2022 All England winners.

The Indonesian duo secured a 21-17, 24-22 victory in 46 minutes, attributing their success to exceptional defense and the frustration it caused their opponents. They are now set for a quarterfinal clash with Chinese Taipei's Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan, who ousted Olympic gold-winning teammates Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin.

The theme of unexpected results continued as Japanese heavyweights Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi, along with Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino, fell to younger opponents. Watanabe and Higashino, the mixed doubles second seeds, lost a hard-fought battle to another Chinese Taipei pair, Ye Hong Wei and Lee Chia Hsin, with a final score of 18-21, 21-11, 18-21.

Hoki and Kobayashi faced a similar fate with a 18-21, 21-13, 18-21 defeat against the spirited Korean youngsters, Jin Yong and Na Sung Seung. Jin and Na, participating in their first Super 750 as a tandem, displayed remarkable progress by defeating higher-ranked opponents.

These upsets have generated excitement and anticipation as emerging talents challenge established names in the world of badminton, making the VICTOR Denmark Open 2023 even more unpredictable and thrilling for fans and players alike.
