Ukrainian Teenager Iulian Boiko Upsets Si Jiahui at Unibet British Open

Posted : 24 September 2024

Ukrainian teenager Iulian Boiko celebrated what he called the best victory of his career by defeating Si Jiahui 4-1 in the second round of the Unibet British Open. The 19-year-old, who just turned 19 the day before the tournament in Cheltenham, is not currently a regular on the professional tour but has earned invitations to select events due to his strong performance in the Q School rankings. Boiko advanced through the qualifying round by overcoming Farakh Ajaib and then stunning world number 13 Si, setting up a last-32 match against either Jak Jones or Alfie Burden.

"This is my biggest win on the pro tour because I really respect Si," Boiko said after the match, noting that his highest break in the game was 78. He expressed satisfaction with his performance, attributing his sharpness to a busy tournament schedule that allows him to compete in both amateur and professional events. Despite enjoying the challenges of amateur play, Boiko admitted a preference for the pro tour, citing the exciting atmosphere and high-quality venues that help him bring out his best game.

In other matches, English Open champion Neil Robertson continued his winning streak with a 4-1 victory over Chris Totten, recording impressive breaks of 100, 99, 86, and 53. Reflecting on his recent success at Brentwood—his 24th ranking title and the first in two years—Robertson shared how meaningful the victory was after a challenging period. He mentioned the impact of his struggles on his family, particularly how his son Alexander noticed the shift in his performance and how he used that experience to teach patience and perseverance.

World number three Mark Allen also advanced, defeating Aaron Hill 4-1 with breaks of 102 and 101, while Thepchaiya Un-Nooh triumphed in a Thai derby against Noppon Saengkham with a decisive 4-0 win. Chris Wakelin secured a notable victory over English Open runner-up Wu Yize, winning 4-2 with a top break of 99, and Stan Moody recorded an impressive 4-0 victory over Michael Holt.
