The Nigerian U-17 female volleyball team defeated their Cameroonian counterparts 3-1 in their second match of the ongoing 2023 Girls' U17 African Nations Volleyball on Monday in Abuja.
The match, played at Package B of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, saw the Nigerian girls avenge their previous loss to Egypt.
The Nigerian girls lost the first set 19-25 but fought back to win the remaining three sets.
They won the second set 25-20, the third set 25-13, and the fourth set 25-22.
The Cameroonian girls fought back but could not capitalize on their chances.
Speaking after the match, coach of the Nigerian team, Sunday Akapson, said they could not celebrate yet because they still had matches to play.
"Congratulations to the girls for a job well done. This is just a starting point for us," he said.
"We are meeting them again on Wednesday in the semi-final, and we want to assure you that the girls will replicate this victory," he added.
On his part, Tamoo Henry, the official delegate of the Cameroonian team, said the girls did well even though they lost the match.
"It was a difficult match against Egypt on Sunday, where we lost our first game, and today against Nigeria," he said.
"The girls are tired. They are children, and we must encourage them. I believe that they will do better in their next match," he added.
Nigeria lost their opening game to Egypt 0-3, while Cameroon also lost their first game to Egypt 2-3.
Nigeria, Egypt, and Cameroon are the only countries participating in the tournament after two countries withdrew due to logistical problems.
Nigeria will face Cameroon in the semi-final on Wednesday.
The 2023 Girls' U17 African Nations Volleyball, which started on Saturday, is expected to end on December 8.
