Tyrrell Hatton Wins Record Third Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

Posted : 07 October 2024

Tyrrell Hatton triumphed at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Sunday, clinching his third title at St Andrews and setting a new record. After matching the Old Course record with an impressive 61 on Saturday, Hatton closed out the tournament with a 70, finishing at 24 under par. His performance allowed him to edge out Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts by just one stroke.

This victory holds special significance for Hatton, as it was the first time he won the tournament with his father present. The emotional impact of the win was evident as he expressed his joy, stating, “To do it at the home of golf is really special. I'm trying not to cry, to be honest. I'm a bit lost for words.” This sentiment underscores the personal importance of the achievement for the Englishman.

Hatton had built a solid three-shot lead by birdying the second, fifth, tenth, and eleventh holes. However, the closing stages became tense when he faced difficulties on the 13th hole, where he recorded a double bogey, followed by another shot dropped on the next hole. Despite this late stumble, Hatton regained his composure and secured the win with a birdie on the final hole, especially after Colsaerts missed a crucial eight-foot putt on the 18th that would have tied the score.

In addition to Hatton's victory, Tommy Fleetwood finished third with a score of 21 under par. The team event saw Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen and Irish businessman Dermot Desmond, the majority shareholder of Celtic, take the title with a combined score of 48 under par. This championship week not only showcased individual brilliance but also highlighted the camaraderie and competitive spirit inherent in the sport.
