Tragedy as NTF Ex-President dies

Posted : 01 April 2025

The former President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), Abdullah Saidu, has passed away just a few months before the federation's election.

Saidu’s death, which was confirmed on April 1st, occurred while he was still serving as the president of the NTF.

In October 2021, Saidu Abubakar was elected President of the NTF in a unanimous decision, which saw the former leader, Margaret Binga, unable to garner a single vote.

During his four-year term, delegates from 22 associated federations participated in the electoral process in the capital city, Abuja, where a new Board was also voted in.

The election to elect new leadership for the NTF is scheduled to take place this year, 2025. However, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has not yet set a date for the federation's elections.

Many believe the elections will be held after the National Sports Festival in Ogun State, which is slated for May 2025.

However, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, expressed shock at the sudden demise of President Saidu.

The DG said the death of the Taekwondo leader was a significant loss not only to the Taekwondo community but to the entire sports sector.

“Alhaji Saidu was an astute sports administrator and a passionate sportsman who contributed immensely to the growth of Taekwondo in the country."

“It’s a sad day for our sports, and Alhaji Abdullahi Saidu will be greatly missed by the Sports Commission. Our hearts are with his family during this difficult time,” he emphasized.

The DG further stated that Alhaji Abdullahi Saidu was an exemplary administrator who demonstrated leadership in the way he managed the affairs of the country’s Taekwondo, and he will be greatly missed.
