Primoz Roglic, a prominent contender in the Tour de France, has withdrawn from this year's race due to injuries sustained in a late-stage crash during stage 12. The 34-year-old Slovenian, initially considered one of the race favorites, concluded Thursday's grueling 204km route from Aurillac to Villeneuve-sur-Lot with a visibly injured right shoulder after the incident occurred just 10 kilometers from the finish line. As a consequence of the crash, Roglic slipped from fourth to sixth place in the overall classification, trailing the leaders by a significant two minutes and 27 seconds.
Following thorough medical assessments conducted by the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team, it was decided that Roglic would not participate in the subsequent stages, focusing instead on his recovery and upcoming athletic objectives. Expressing support for Roglic's recuperation, the team conveyed their well wishes, emphasizing his health as a priority.
Roglic's departure marks another twist in his Tour de France journey, marked by both triumphs and setbacks. Despite victories in other major cycling events like the Vuelta a Espana and Giro d'Italia, the Slovenian has faced challenges at the Tour, including previous withdrawals due to injuries sustained in crashes. His absence alters the dynamics of the race as it progresses through its stages, leaving fans and competitors alike to adjust to this unexpected turn of events.
