Tour Championship: Rory McIlroy maintains lead with level-par 70 in Atlanta
Posted : 25 August 2023
Rory McIlroy battled through back issues to shoot a level-par 70 in the first round of the Tour Championship in Atlanta, positioning himself well. He struggled initially with no birdies on the outward nine, resulting in a two-shot drop. However, a stronger back nine featuring four birdies and two bogeys brought him within three shots of the lead at seven under overall.
The trio of Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, and Viktor Hovland share the lead at 10 under par. Morikawa, the 2021 Open champion, surged to the top with a bogey-free 61, including seven birdies and an eagle. Bradley also stayed bogey-free, carding a 63. Hovland, fresh off a recent win, shot a two-under 68.
Scottie Scheffler, who started one shot ahead, carded a one-over 71, positioning him just one stroke off the lead at East Lake Golf Club. England's Matt Fitzpatrick finished with a three-under 67, highlighted by an eagle putt on the 18th, bringing him level with McIlroy at seven under overall.
Despite suffering a back injury during exercise at home just before the tournament, McIlroy, who is already part of the European Ryder Cup team, managed to compete. He explained his lower back seized up, hindering his ability to address the ball, but he fought through the discomfort to put up a respectable performance.
The Tour Championship employs a stroke-based bonus system for its season-ending event, granting different starting scores to golfers based on their FedEx Cup points. The range starts at 10 under for points leader Scottie Scheffler and goes to level par for the final five qualifiers in the 30-man event.
