Tony Finau will not be competing in this week's Hero World Challenge, the prestigious exhibition event held annually in the Bahamas and hosted by Tiger Woods. As of Monday afternoon, neither Finau nor tournament organizers have provided an official reason for his withdrawal. Austria's Sepp Straka has been granted an exemption to take Finau's place in the 20-player field.
Ranked 26th in the world, Finau has been the subject of rumors linking him to LIV Golf once again this offseason. This speculation follows his decision to turn down a previous offer from the controversial league, choosing instead to remain with the PGA Tour.
In another LIV Golf-related development, Jon Rahm, a Spanish golfer and Finau's close friend, is in need of a new player for his 2025 Legion XIII team after Kieran Vincent of Zimbabwe was dropped. Rahm, known for his close bond with Finau, has previously spoken highly of him. "If you don't get along with Tony Finau, there is something wrong with you," Rahm said earlier this year, highlighting Finau's friendly nature and their shared competitiveness on the golf course.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his participation in the Hero World Challenge, Finau is scheduled to team up with world No. 1 Nelly Korda at the Grant Thornton Invitational later this month, a mixed team event featuring PGA and LPGA Tour players. However, it remains unclear if he will participate in the PGA Tour’s season-opening event, The Sentry, in Maui.
