Tommy Freeman reflects on overcoming setbacks as he gears up for England's Six Nations clash with Wales

Posted : 09 February 2024

Tommy Freeman, the Northampton wing, reflects on the challenges he has faced in his rugby career, acknowledging the hurdles that have shaped his journey to the international stage.

Despite experiencing a setback when released from the Leicester Tigers academy as a youngster, Freeman persevered and found himself earning his fourth England cap in the recent Six Nations victory over Italy.

However, his previous Test appearance against South Africa in November 2022, where he was substituted at half-time, served as a stark reminder of the obstacles he had yet to overcome.

Freeman opens up about being perceived as "second best" in his early years, facing competition and biases at the fly-half position during his youth. The setback of being released from the Leicester Tigers academy added to the challenges he had to navigate.

The November 2022 match against South Africa, which marked the end of Eddie Jones' coaching tenure, became another testing point for Freeman. Struggling to adapt to the stop-start nature and increased intensity of Test rugby, he found it challenging to make an impact during the limited time on the field.

Despite the setbacks, Freeman credits the support from his club, Northampton Saints, and their staff for helping him bounce back and reclaim his spot on the international stage. The 22-year-old winger expresses gratitude for the encouragement and assistance that fueled his determination to prove doubters wrong, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.
