Tommy Fleetwood matched the course record with a stellar 10-under-par 62 to take the lead at the Abu Dhabi Championship. His exceptional round at Yas Links placed him one stroke ahead of Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen and American Johannes Veerman. Fleetwood's day began strongly with early birdies on the first and third holes, accompanied by an eagle, setting the pace for a consistent performance throughout the round.
Fleetwood continued his hot streak, picking up another birdie on the seventh and then firing off four more birdies in a stretch of five holes after the turn. He capped off his impressive day with an eighth birdie on the final hole, successfully getting up and down from a bunker. Reflecting on his performance, Fleetwood expressed satisfaction, noting his strong putting and ability to read the greens well. He acknowledged it was a great start, even as he felt his swing improved as the round progressed.
Meanwhile, Thorbjorn Olesen delivered a flawless round, highlighted by eagles on the seventh and 11th holes, including a spectacular 43-foot birdie putt on the 13th. The Dane, who recently won the Ras Al Khaimah Championship in the UAE, showcased his confidence with a solid nine-under 63. Johannes Veerman matched Olesen’s score but made a single bogey at the 12th, where he needed three putts. The duo trails Fleetwood by just one stroke heading into the next round.
Rory McIlroy had a strong start as he continues his quest for another Race to Dubai title, sitting five shots behind Fleetwood. With a win in Abu Dhabi, McIlroy could equal the legendary Seve Ballesteros with six Order of Merit titles, just behind Colin Montgomerie’s record of eight. Currently leading the Race to Dubai standings by over 1,500 points ahead of Thriston Lawrence, McIlroy emphasized the importance of performing well this week to ease the pressure heading into the season-ending Tour Championship.
