Belgian cyclist Tim Merlier secured victory in the third stage of the Giro d'Italia, prevailing in a challenging sprint finish. Despite race leader Tadej Pogacar's late surge, the Slovenian retained the coveted maglia rosa, finishing safely within the peloton.
The 166km route from Novara to Fossano, predominantly flat, initially hinted at a sprint showdown, but Pogacar's unexpected breakaway with 2km to go added a dramatic twist, ultimately thwarted by the chasing pack.
Merlier, representing Soudal Quick-Step, clinched his second Giro stage win, crossing the line ahead of Jonathan Milan and Biniam Girmay. Pogacar's bold move to join Mikkel Frolich Honoure on the attack surprised many, but the peloton managed to reel them in just in time for Merlier to claim victory.
Reflecting on his hard-fought win, Merlier emphasized the challenging nature of the final kilometers, highlighting the relentless wind and his decisive sprint to the finish.
Pogacar, downplaying his breakaway attempt, explained that he merely followed the wheel and never intended a solo attack. Despite narrowly missing out on victory, Pogacar's UAE Team Emirates retained the overall lead, with Geraint Thomas of INEOS Grenadiers trailing by 46 seconds.
The stage's intensity underscored the fierce competition among riders, with the general classification witnessing notable shifts. As the Giro progresses, Tuesday's stage four promises another opportunity for sprinters to shine in the 190km ride from Acqui Terme to Andora.
