Tiger Woods to Miss Hero World Challenge

Posted : 26 November 2024

Tiger Woods has confirmed he will not participate in the upcoming Hero World Challenge, set for December 5-8 in Albany, Bahamas, marking an extension of his ongoing absence from competitive golf. The 15-time major champion, who is also the tournament host, was not initially included in the field when it was announced last month, despite expectations that he might take one of three exemption spots available for the event, which features 20 of the world’s top players.

Woods has not competed since the British Open in July, where he missed the cut, and subsequently underwent microdecompression surgery in September to address nerve impingement in his lower back. In a statement on social media, the 48-year-old expressed disappointment at not being able to play, while emphasizing his commitment to his role as host.

While Woods did not specify a reason for his absence, it is consistent with his recent limited playing schedule due to ongoing physical challenges. The golf legend has been managing a series of injuries over the years, making it difficult for him to compete at the highest level.

The three exemption spots for the Hero World Challenge were filled by Justin Thomas, a two-time major winner; Jason Day, who won the 2015 PGA Championship; and 20-year-old rising star Nick Dunlap, who secured two victories on the tour this year.
