Tiger Woods nears Masters cut record amidst physical challenges at Augusta

Posted : 12 April 2024

Tiger Woods finds himself on the brink of potential Masters history at Augusta National, with 23 holes left to play on Friday, provided his surgically repaired legs and back can withstand the rigors of the course.

The 15-time major champion was sitting at one-under par through 13 holes when Thursday's opening round was halted due to darkness, following a delay of over two hours due to morning rain showers. Woods, currently tied for 17th, aims to extend his record streak of 24 consecutive Masters cuts, a feat shared with Gary Player and Fred Couples.

Despite facing challenges with his physical condition following severe leg injuries from a 2021 car crash and subsequent ankle surgery last April, Woods remains determined to navigate the demanding Augusta layout.

The hilly terrain presents a significant test for Woods, who acknowledges the strenuous nature of the course, particularly given his recent health struggles. Nevertheless, Woods remains focused on the task ahead, with plans to resume his round at dawn and complete the remaining holes before embarking on the second round.

Reflecting on the challenging conditions of Thursday's play, Woods highlighted the unpredictable and swirling winds as a significant factor, adding to the complexity of the game. Despite the physical toll and the variability of his condition, Woods maintains a pragmatic attitude, acknowledging the fluctuations in his physical well-being from day to day.

As he prepares to continue his pursuit of Masters glory, Woods faces both the physical demands of the course and the uncertainty of his own physical state, underscoring the resilience and determination that have defined his illustrious career.
