In his first tournament appearance since the Masters, Tiger Woods found himself struggling to make the cut at the PGA Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. A disappointing second round saw him carding a six-over-par 77, leaving him far from the projected cut line at Valhalla Golf Club. Woods, a 15-times major winner, had enjoyed a milestone at the Masters last month with his 24th consecutive made cut at the major, but his performance at Valhalla showcased his ongoing struggle to regain form.
The former world No 1 faced setbacks early in his second round, including a triple bogey on the second and fourth holes, along with a bogey on three. Despite brief glimpses of recovery with birdies on the seventh and eighth holes, Woods faltered again with flubbed putts leading to bogeys on the 11th and 12th. However, he ended the day on a slightly brighter note, securing a birdie on the par-five 18th hole.
Reflecting on his performance, Woods admitted to making critical errors early in the round, acknowledging that such mistakes are particularly costly in major tournaments. Despite his struggles, Woods expressed determination to improve, emphasizing the need for more tournament play to regain his competitive edge. While physically feeling better than a month ago, Woods recognized the necessity for further improvement as he aims to prepare for upcoming tournaments, including the US Open at Pinehurst.
