Thriston Lawrence Leads Strong South African Contingent

Posted : 25 September 2024

Thriston Lawrence will lead a formidable South African contingent at the upcoming Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on the DP World Tour. Having recently entered the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings, Lawrence arrives in Scotland as South Africa's most in-form golfer, following a narrow playoff defeat in the BMW PGA Championship. This marked his fifth runners-up finish on the DP World Tour this year, and he currently ranks second in the Race to Dubai standings.

Joining Lawrence in the South African challenge are seasoned players Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace, both of whom have strong ties to the tournament. Grace, despite recent struggles, returns to a competition where he became the only South African to win the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2012, setting a record as the youngest champion at 24. Grace is also the only golfer to have won both the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and its sister event, the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa.

Oosthuizen will compete with the opportunity to match Grace's achievement, having claimed the Alfred Dunhill Championship title previously. In total, 34 South Africans are set to compete across the renowned courses of the Old Course, Kingsbarns, and Carnoustie. This includes rising stars like last season's Sunshine Tour Order of Merit winner Ryan van Velzen and players such as Dean Burmester, Dylan Frittelli, and George Coetzee.

The tournament, beginning next Thursday, will feature a stellar international field, including defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, and Shane Lowry. The event’s popular pro-am format will also see celebrities like Kelly Slater, Bill Murray, Andy Garcia, and Kevin Pietersen joining the festivities.
