The U.S. Open has increased its prize money to $20 million, making it the highest among the major golf championships and on par with the elevated events of the PGA Tour.
This represents a $2.5 million increase from the previous year and is double the amount from 2016. The winner of this year's U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club will receive $3.6 million, compared to the $3.15 million won by Matt Fitzpatrick in the previous edition.
Prize money has become a significant focus in recent years, with other tournaments and tours also increasing their purses. The PGA Tour responded with $20 million purses at ten tournaments, including $25 million for The Players Championship.
The Masters increased its purse to $18 million, while the PGA Championship raised its prize money to $17.5 million. The British Open's prize money for this year has not been announced yet, but it was $14 million in the previous edition.
The CEO of the USGA, Mike Whan, stated that they wanted the U.S. Open to be significant and found $20 million to be the appropriate amount. He emphasized that while they want the purse to be substantial, they also consider factors like venue, television coverage, and sustainability studies.
Whan clarified that the USGA is not interested in engaging in a money race with the PGA Tour but aims to ensure that the money and opportunities provided by the U.S. Open contribute to its overall significance and appeal to players at various levels.
