The Players: Scheffler's Success at TPC Sawgrass Raises Questions About His Future
Posted : 06 April 2023
Scottie Scheffler won The Players by five shots and regained the number one ranking. In the coming weeks, Scheffler will defend his championships at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and The Masters.
Before the final round of The Players, Scottie Scheffler sat in front of the golfing press and maintained that winning the tournament was more significant than regaining the world No. 1 ranking, even though he now has both in his possession.
When the PGA Tour's marquee event began, Scheffler was one of three players who had a chance to finish first in the world rankings. However, Jon Rahm's mid-tournament withdrawal and Rory McIlroy's missed cut eliminated all possibilities and returned control of the outcome to Scheffler.
Scheffler surged ahead with a third-round 65 before dominating an inexperienced leaderboard on the final day to secure an astonishing five-shot victory. Rahm and McIlroy's absence meant that a top-five finish was going to be enough for Scheffler.
Scheffler wins $4.5 million for his victory, becoming just the third player in history to simultaneously hold The Players and The Masters, joining Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.
In a little over 13 months, Scheffler has won six PGA Tour tournaments.
