The Open Championship begins at Royal Liverpool, Matthew Jordan starts off
Posted : 20 July 2023
Matthew Jordan had a special moment on Thursday morning as he played Royal Liverpool for the 151st edition of The Open Championship. Despite being a member at the club for years and playing it hundreds of times, this occasion was unlike any other as he hit the opening tee shot.
The crowd gave him a warm welcome as he teed off, and although his drive went just left of the pot bunker into the rough, he managed to save par with a brilliant 14-foot putt after his next shot landed in a bunker near the green.
The 26-year-old professional from the DP World Tour continued to impress, making the first birdie of the championship by hitting a remarkable second shot to 16 feet on the second hole.
He followed it up with another birdie on the fifth but faced a slight setback with his first bogey at the sixth. However, Jordan didn't let that deter him as he bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 eighth, finishing the front nine with a 2-under par 33.
It's not uncommon for The R&A to have a player with local connections hit the first shot, but Jordan's story is special as he has been a member at Royal Liverpool since his teenage years.
His journey to The Open involved going through qualifying at nearby West Lancashire, making his first Open appearance even more meaningful.
