The Memorial Tournament: Rory McIlroy moves into share of lead
Posted : 05 June 2023
After a determined third round that put him in a tie for the lead on six under, Rory McIlroy enters the Memorial Tournament's final round with "a terrific opportunity" of winning.
The Northern Irishman moved up six spots in the standings on Saturday thanks to his two-under-par 70.
Kim Si-woo of South Korea and American David Lipsky (72) are in the lead (71).
"I need to stick to the gameplan, not get too ahead of myself or be too aggressive," McIlroy said
The 34-year-old McIlroy has been concentrating on keeping the ball in play off the tee at Ohio's testing Muirfield Village Golf Club.
He outperformed everyone in the field in round three, needing just 22 putts total, the fewest of any player.
He added: "I am feeling more comfortable. I don't think I am 100%. I am battling and hanging in there. The course is playing really tough and it's about positioning your way around the course.
"It feels better. I keep saying this, I feel like I am not fighting the club face as much as I have been. I am able to release it a little bit more and just have a little more trust in it. This week, with how tough it's playing, you need to trust it."
McIlroy's important shots were a chip-in for a birdie on the par-3 12th and, after missing the green on 16, an eight-iron from 178 yards to within 10 feet and a putt that he sank for a birdie on the 17th.
