The Masters: Cameron Smith Challenges the LIV Players to Perform Well at Augusta

Posted : 16 April 2023
The 18-person LIV team at Augusta National this week includes six previous Masters champions; Smith is the current Open champion following his remarkable triumph at St Andrews last summer.

Despite calling the media's coverage of LIV "rubbish," Cameron Smith acknowledged that the breakaway circuit would benefit from having some of its players compete at The Masters.

"I think it's just important for LIV guys to be up there because I think we need to be up there," Smith said ahead of The Masters.
"I think there's a lot of chatter about 'these guys don't play real golf; these guys don't play real golf courses'. For sure, I'll be the first one to say the fields aren't as strong, but we've still got a lot of guys up there that can play some really serious golf.

"We compete against each other hard week-in and week-out and we're trying to do the same things that we did six months ago. It's a good feeling to have that competition and it's good to see Brooks [Koepka] win last week. He's playing some really good golf. I think we just need a good, strong finish."

The defending Open champion is one of 18 LIV members in the field at Augusta National for the first major of the year, where Rory McIlroy has another chance to complete the career Grand Slam and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion.

A significant victory this week for a player from the competing circuit would be a "great statement," according to Brooks Koepka, while Smith thinks a solid showing from the LIV contingent may help lessen the controversy surrounding their tournaments.

Given his transfer from the PGA Tour at the conclusion of the FedExCup playoffs last season, Smith said he was worried about how his colleagues would react to him on the practice range. The Australian also questioned if the LIV story is being overemphasized.
