TGL Explores Future Collaboration with LPGA

Posted : 22 November 2024

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's new indoor professional golf league, TGL, has secured 24 PGA Tour members for its debut season, which is set to begin on January 7 at the SoFi Centre in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

However, the two golf stars have also been in discussions with the LPGA regarding a potential future expansion of the league. According to a TGL spokesperson, these discussions are in the early stages and any collaboration would only take place after TGL's inaugural season.

LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan confirmed at the CME Group Tour Championship that the LPGA has been exploring ways to enhance the visibility of its players, including potential synergies with TGL.

She emphasized the importance of getting LPGA athletes more exposure through innovative golf formats. "The LPGA should be in every conversation about golf," Marcoux Samaan remarked, adding that the LPGA has been in talks with TGL for a while and would look to develop a collaborative plan in the future.

TGL could potentially introduce a women's league or feature mixed events that would include both PGA and LPGA players. The league's innovative hybrid format combines simulator golf with a short game area, allowing all players to tee off from the same spot, which enhances the fan experience. Mixed events have gained popularity in recent years, as evidenced by McIlroy's victory in February's "The Match," which also included LPGA stars Rose Zhang and Lexi Thompson.

Looking ahead, the LPGA will also be represented at the Grant Thornton Invitational in December, a co-sanctioned event with the PGA Tour that features LPGA stars like Zhang and Nelly Korda alongside PGA Tour members.

Additionally, there is potential for a 36-hole mixed-team golf tournament at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, with the proposal currently awaiting a response from the International Olympic Committee. Further promoting the idea of mixed events, Solheim Cup US team captain Stacy Lewis has suggested that the Presidents Cup should become a mixed competition in the future.
