Nigeria’s participation in the forthcoming Africa U-17 Zone V Boys and Girls Beach Handball Championships, scheduled to take place in Tanzania from Feb. 20 to Feb. 24, is under threat due to a lack of funding.
The Head Coach of the team, Christopher Olufojude, revealed that the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has yet to call the players to camp in preparation for the championships.
Olufojude appealed to the National Sports Commission (NSC) to support the federation with adequate funding to facilitate the mobilization and preparation of the teams, particularly the male team, for the competition.
He stated that funding remains the primary obstacle preventing the team from commencing preparations.
“We plead with the NSC to come to our rescue. The boys are ready to represent Nigeria and make the country proud in Tanzania by winning a medal.
“It is unfortunate that we do not have a female team to represent us in the championship, but we have a strong male team capable of competing at the event.
“Some of the boys who recently participated in and won a championship in Ethiopia will be included in the team to represent Nigeria in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
“We aim to use this Beach Handball Under-17 Championship to qualify for the World Cup and, at the same time, for the World Youth Games in 2026.
“We want to keep the boys training very hard so that by 2028, at the Los Angeles Olympic Games, Nigeria will also feature in Beach Handball, which is now a medal-winning event,” he said.
The coach further explained: “Whenever the federation is ready to open camp for the players ahead of the championship, 14 players will be invited to camp, but only 10 will travel for the event.
“Four officials will accompany the team, including the leader of the delegation, the secretary of the federation, and two coaches,” he said.
The African championship will also serve as a qualifier for the World Cup, scheduled to be held in Tunisia from June 17 to June 22.
The World Cup in Tunisia will, in turn, act as a qualifier for the Junior Olympics, which Senegal will host in 2026.
