Team Nasarawa Karate dazzles at North-Central, finish third best

The Nasarawa State Junior (U-17) Karate Team returned home on Sunday after finishing third at the Maiden edition of the Prince Sule-Iko Sani Sami/KFN North-Central Zonal Karate Championship.


The cadet championships were held from June 20th to 22nd, 2023, at the FCT Sports Complex, Old Parade Ground, Area 10, Garki, Abuja.


Team Nasarawa secured the 3rd overall position behind Kogi State and FCT Abuja, who claimed 2nd and 1st places respectively, after earning two Gold, five Silver, and seven Bronze medals.


Chineye Agbo won one Gold in the -59kg Girls' Category and one Silver in the Team Kata Girls' Cadre; Favour Moses won one Gold in the -55kg Boys' Category and one Bronze in the Male Team Kata; Magdalene Inji picked up two Silver medals in the Girls' and Team Kata, and one Bronze in the -53kg Female category; Emmanuel Ukeje earned one Silver in the -61kg Boys' Category and one Bronze in the Boys' Team Kata.


Others included Jonah Yakubu, who won one Silver in the -68kg Boys' Category and one Bronze in the Team Kata; Chidinma Amadi settled for one Silver in the Female Team Kata and one Bronze in the -48kg Girls' Cadre; 12-year-old Chinonso Moses won two Bronze medals in the Boys' Team Kata and Individual Boys' Demonstration; Otuma Alexander won one Silver in the -55kg Boys' Cadre and one Bronze in the Team Kata; while Clinton Ogorbueze secured one Silver in the -55kg Male and one Bronze in the Male Team Kata.


Team Nasarawa participated in the Championship with ten athletes and two officials.


The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Jafaru Ango, along with the Permanent Secretary, Chief Barr. Isaac Danladi, and Directors of the Organization, were present to welcome the worthy young ambassadors of the State at the Commissioner's office on Monday.


Jafaru congratulated the team for bringing pride and honor to the State at the event.


He highlighted the Ministry's efforts to fulfill its mandate in line with the sports and talent development blueprints set by the Governor Abdullahi Sule-led administration.


The Commissioner emphasized the Ministry's commitment to creating a conducive environment for all sports to thrive, as it is a priority for the Governor to see the State's athletes excel in every sporting event.


He assured the team and other sports teams in the State of necessary support to prepare them effectively for future Championships and to bring more accolades to the State.


The Permanent Secretary, Isaac Danladi, praised the young athletes and announced the Ministry's plans to provide suitable sports facilities for their training programs, aligning with best practices.


Danladi encouraged the athletes to maintain discipline and dedication to their training and goals. He commended the Commissioner for his supportive role towards the athletes and their coaches, noting that his passion drives the athletes to strive for success.


Coach Kingsley Enyie expressed gratitude to the Ministry for their support and pledged to continue working hard to bring more glory to the State.


Team captain Jonah Yakubu thanked the Commissioner, the Permanent Secretary, and the Ministry for enabling their participation in the two-day event. He assured them of the team's determination to strive for more medals in future events.


The event drew nearly 70 participants from Nasarawa, Benue, Plateau, Kogi, Niger, Kwara States, and FCT Abuja.
