Taylor Moore Leads Zozo Championship with Career-Low 63 as Schauffele, Morikawa Struggle

Posted : 24 October 2024

American golfer Taylor Moore took a narrow one-shot lead after the first round of the Zozo Championship at Narashino Country Club in Japan on Thursday. Moore achieved a career-best opening round on the PGA Tour, finishing with an impressive seven-under-par 63 that included six birdies and a remarkable 100-foot chip for an eagle on the par-five 18th hole. His only setback came with a bogey on the fourth hole.

Moore's strong performance placed him ahead of a group of players tied for second, which included his fellow Americans Max Greyserman and Eric Cole, as well as Colombia's Nico Echavarria. Reflecting on his eagle, Moore noted, "I had plenty of green to work with. I hit a nice chip and it went in," showcasing his confidence on the course.

In contrast, Xander Schauffele, who has already claimed victories at both the PGA Championship and the British Open this year, faced a challenging start. His struggles began on the par-four ninth hole, where his tee shot became lodged between tree roots. After unsuccessfully attempting to play the ball twice, Schauffele ultimately opted for an unplayable lie, resulting in a quadruple-bogey and finishing the round at three-over-par.

Defending champion Collin Morikawa also encountered difficulties after an initial birdie. He bogeyed the fourth hole and double-bogeyed the sixth, but managed to bounce back with three birdies, finishing the day at one-under-par. Former world No. 1 Justin Thomas had a solid performance as well, ending the round tied for seventh at four-under-par.
