Hamza Onai and Captain Laksh Bakrania's spectacular performance against Sierra Leone at the University of Lagos Cricket Oval secured a 98-run victory and an ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup ticket.
This will be the first time Tanzania, an ICC Associate country, participates in the World Cup. Namibia and Zimbabwe are set to co-host the global tournament in 2026. Tanzania defeated five other countries to emerge as champions.
Tanzania led the pack with 10 points from 5 matches, Namibia follows with 8 points, while Kenya is in 3rd place with 6 points. The bottom three—Nigeria, Uganda, and Sierra Leone—have been relegated to Division 2.
Host nation Nigeria will play their final game against Uganda on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at the TBS Cricket Oval in Lagos.
The President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Mr. Uyi Akpata, expressed pride in the Tanzanian team's performance, stating his belief that "Tanzania will be Africa's great ambassadors at the World Cup."
Tanzania, along with two ICC Full Member countries, Zimbabwe and South Africa, will represent Africa at the international cricket competitions in 2026.
